Canada strengthened its hold atop Group C with a 4-0 victory over Paraguay in the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup on Sunday afternoon at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Texas.

After a near-miss in the 23’, Adriana Leon opened the scoring in the 25’ connecting with scissor-kick around the penalty marker. VAR confirmed the goal as Canada took a 1-0 lead.

Olivia Smith got on the scoresheet in the 39’ to attain her second international goal. The 19-year-old pounced on a blocked shot from Paraguay GK Cristina Recalde and dribbled inside the box to pick her target.

Paraguay looked to respond, and Griselda Garay attempted to score before halftime with a long range hit in the 44’ that went wide. Garay had another long-distance attempt from just inside the half field line in the 45'+5 in what was Paraguay's only shot on goal.

Leon then doubled her tally to extend Canada’s lead in the 49’, connecting in front of goal on a build up by substitute Clarissa Larisey.

Leon completed her hat-trick in the 56’ with a rocket from the right side of the penalty area. Larisey collected her second assist of the day on the play.

DF Camila Barbosa denied Jordyn Huitema in the 86’ to keep the scoreline intact, as goal difference could serve as a tiebreaker for Paraguay.

Simi Awujo earned a penalty kick for Canada in stoppage time. Canada captain Jessie Fleming took the spot kick but was denied by the crossbar.

Her three goals place Leon at the top of the scorer’s chart and a frontrunner to win the Golden Boot.

Canada will play Costa Rica on the final Group C matchday at Shell Energy Stadium on Wednesday, followed by Paraguay against El Salvador to close out the group stage.
