Untold Truth About A Poor Man Who Revolutionized Fashion | History of Haute Couture |
It all began in the 17th century, when King Louis XIV relocated the French court to Versailles. He brought opulence and luxury to French royals and stimulated French ascendency in European fashion. His demise, in 1715, Led his son to become the emperor. His son’s wife Queen Marie-Antoinette was notorious for extravagance. She popularized custom made outfits by designer Marie-Jeanne Bertin. It was just the beginning of custom-fitted exclusive fashion pieces called “Haute Couture”.
What started as exclusive fashion pieces has become a $12 billion market, having global players like Chanel, Dior, Armani, and Givenchy. These four brands account for approximately 43% of the total market. Europe is the largest market, accounting for about 34%, followed by North America and Asia Pacific.
By looking at the success of Haute Couture, you would never be able to guess that it was vanished after the execution of Queen Marie Antoinette by French Revolutionaries.
However, in 19th century, a poor man “Charles Frederick Worth” who was born in Lincolnshire, England, on October 13, 1825 revived Haute Couture. His father was a solicitor, but, an alcoholic who ruined family savings and abandoned them. Worth’s mother then supported the family by cleaning the houses. Worth being raised in an impoverished family, was pushed into working at a young age.
He worked as an apprentice and clerk for two London based textile merchants where he gained knowledge of fabrics. He was uncommonly astute in recognizing that his talents are better directed towards artistic creativity.
Just 20 years old Worth arrived in Paris in 1845. Neither he had money nor French language skills, but he had a headful of dreams, artistic flair, courage to fight poverty, and determination to thrive. Within two years, the young Worth found work with Gagelin, a prominent textile firm. While working at Gagelin, he fell in love with Marie Vernet, one of the company’s models, and married her.
Within ten years, one of his designs won a first-class medal at the Paris World Fair. In 1858, he founded his own fashion house in Paris by the name “House of Worth”. Afterwards, he started dressing Queens and Empresses such as Empress Eugenie, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Maria Cristina, and Queen Ranavalona. Worth, an innovative designer and greatest entrepreneur is known as the father of Haute Couture.
