On 1 January, 2024, a magnitude-7.6 earthquake struck near the Sea of Japan coast, killing at least 240 people. CNA correspondent Michiyo Ishida was in Ishikawa Prefecture, which suffered the highest casualties, in the immediate aftermath of Japan's worst earthquake in nearly a decade.

While there, she travelled to some of the hardest-hit towns on the Noto Peninsula at the northern tip of Ishikawa, including Wajima, which is known for its traditional lacquerware industry and morning market. The Wajima morning market, which had a history of more than 1,000 years, was destroyed in an earthquake-triggered fire that tore through the area. Michiyo also went to Wakura, a famous onsen destination, and the beach town Shika, where she witnessed the struggles and challenges facing residents as the fast-ageing region tries to pick up the pieces.
