Various Global food regulators have put a ban on the sale of Indian Spices companies for allegedly containing traces of ethylene oxide above the permissible levels.
Ethylene oxide is a chemical compound with the formula C2H4O and is used as a fumigating agent by the spice industries to reduce microbial contamination, such as E. coli and Salmonella.
As per The International Agency For Research on Cancer, ethylene oxide is a Group 1 carcinogenic.
How will it Impact the Indian Spices industry?
- India is the world’s largest spice producer and one of the largest exporters of spices.
- In 2023-24, India's spice exports totaled $4.25 billion, accounting for a 12% share of the global spice exports.
What is India’s Response?
- The Spices Board of India has initiated mandatory testing of products shipped abroad and is reportedly working with exporters to identify the root cause of contamination.
